Date Night in Citrus County: Restaurants, Experiences & Fun Things to Do as a Couple

I will start making these blogs more consistently, and I think a big inspiration for what I write about will be what I think you guys would find most useful.

Why? Because it’s usually the questions I receive over and over again in my DMs and comments that make me realize what people are actually looking for.

Just in the past three days, five different people asked me essentially the same question. So here I am, feeling inspired and finally putting together a blog about it!

The question, and I’m generalizing a little, is:

“Where should I take my partner if we want to go out on a nice date night?”

Now, what I usually interpret that to mean is that you’re willing to spend a little more than you normally would on dinner. Maybe you want to dress up, celebrate something special, enjoy a nice atmosphere, or simply switch things up from your usual dinner routine.

And I get it!

Every couple is different. We all have different tastes, budgets, and ideas of what makes a great date night. Some people want an intimate dinner with a glass of wine, others want to do something adventurous, and some just want really good food followed by a fun activity.

So, rather than giving you a list of restaurants, I wanted to put together a little bit of everything. Different settings, vibes, price points, activities, and locations throughout Citrus County.

Hopefully, you’ll find something useful! Maybe you’ve already been to all of these places. If that’s the case, I’d love to know which one is your favorite. Or maybe you’ll discover a new spot to switch things up for your next anniversary, Valentine’s Day, or just a random Thursday date night.

I’ll share a little personal experience, pros and cons, practical information, and what I’d recommend ordering. If I’ve already made a video about a place, I’ll include that as well!

PART 1: DINNER SPOTS

1. Katch 22 | Lecanto

Oh, Katch. How I love Katch!

And I think everyone knows this by now, ha! I don’t care about hiding it because it truly has consistently been a great experience for us.

Every time we go, we request Alex as our server. Alex is probably, dare I say, my favorite server in town? Just wonderful!

Every meal I’ve had here, and everything I’ve seen the people I’m dining with order, has been genuinely high quality. We’re talking about food that can easily compete with some of the best restaurants in other cities I’ve lived in. And as you know, I like to eat out A LOT. So that’s high praise coming from me.

Katch 22 is a smaller, upscale restaurant in Lecanto with a beautiful atmosphere, a great bar, thoughtfully prepared dishes, and cocktails that make you want to stay a little longer.

It’s one of those places where you can actually dress up a little, enjoy a nice meal, and have a proper date night without feeling out of place.

The Pros

  • The food, drinks, and desserts are genuinely amazing.

  • Quality and presentation have been consistently great in my experience.

  • The atmosphere is perfect for date night.

  • Portions are great for one person, which I appreciate when going out for a nicer meal.

  • Great lighting! Yes, this matters to me.

  • Beautiful bar with a great cocktail selection.

  • Excellent service.

The Cons

  • No outdoor seating.

  • Reservations are highly recommended. You risk not getting a table if you just show up.

  • It’s not particularly close to other walkable attractions, so don’t plan on taking an evening stroll immediately after dinner.

What I’d Order

The focaccia bread they serve is amazing. Start with that!

I’m also a big fan of their soup of the day. I’ve tried several of their rotating options, and they’ve all been great.

For my entrée, I usually gravitate toward the Truffle Mushroom Risotto, but I swap the mushrooms for shrimp because I don’t love mushrooms. Their steak specials are also worth considering.

And now, the most important part: THE ESPRESSO MARTINI.

Alex makes my favorite espresso martini. If you like yours on the sweeter side, ask him to make you the Karla/KCH Travels favorite for a nice twist. He knows!

For dessert, I honestly love them all, but I think I’ve ordered the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake the most.

My verdict: If you’re looking for a proper dinner date with great food, cocktails, and service, this is one of my top recommendations in Citrus County.

2. Vintage on 5th | Crystal River

I actually noticed this place when we first moved here. Duh, because it’s right in downtown Crystal River, ha! I’d also heard great things about it from family members.

So, we decided to make a reservation for our anniversary, and it was an awesome meal!

I honestly don’t go as often as I’d like because it’s a bit of a drive for us, but it’s definitely a place I would recommend for a special dinner.

I remember the wine selection being great, and once again, the lighting and atmosphere were right up my alley.

Vintage on 5th is an upscale boutique restaurant located in a historic building in downtown Crystal River. It has that cozy, intimate, slightly romantic atmosphere that makes it feel like you’re doing something a little more special than just going out to dinner.

And one thing I particularly love is its location. You’re right in downtown Crystal River, so you can easily continue your evening with a little walk or another drink somewhere nearby.

The Pros

  • My favorite kind of date night atmosphere.

  • Great location. You’re right in downtown, so you can walk around after dinner or grab another drink at one of the nearby bars.

  • Outdoor seating is a big plus in my book. I love sitting outside, especially when the weather is nice.

  • Generous portions. Some dishes are definitely shareable.

  • Excellent wine selection.

The Cons

  • If downtown is busy, parking might require a little extra walking.

  • When the restaurant is particularly crowded, it can get a little loud.

What I’d Order

The Steak Bites! They may be seasonal, but I absolutely loved them. If you see them on the menu, get them.

The 5th St. Goat Mac & Cheese is another recommendation. And yeah, I’ll probably love anything with goat cheese.

I also enjoyed the house Pinot Noir they had when we visited.

For dessert, we went with the chocolate cake.

My verdict: Perfect for anniversaries, celebrations, or a dinner date where you want to enjoy a nice meal and have somewhere to walk around afterward.

3. Oscar Penn’s | Inverness

Honestly, I only tried Oscar Penn’s for the first time fairly recently, but I immediately loved it as a date night option!

It’s super cozy inside, and the food was really good.

One thing I found particularly interesting is that they offer steak, seafood, and sushi. So you have a little bit of everything depending on what you’re in the mood for.

I still need to go back and try their sushi because, well, obviously!

I also love the location. It feels a little secluded and intimate, but you’re literally right in downtown Inverness. It’s a nice combination.

You can enjoy dinner and then head out for a walk around the area or grab a drink somewhere nearby.

The Pros

  • Cozy, intimate atmosphere.

  • A unique combination of steak, seafood, and sushi.

  • Great option for couples who don’t necessarily want the same type of food.

  • Downtown Inverness location makes it easy to continue the evening elsewhere.

  • A good option for a more traditional dinner date.

The Cons

  • Limited operating days and dinner hours.

  • Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

My verdict: Pair dinner here with a walk around Liberty Park and a nightcap downtown. Honestly, that’s a pretty solid date night itinerary.

4. The Three Musketeers | Crystal River

This is another one I’d put on your date night list, especially if you’re looking for something a little different.

Located at The Retreat at Crystal Manatee in downtown Crystal River, The Three Musketeers offers a European-inspired dining experience.

The menu is a little different from your typical local restaurant, featuring European-inspired dishes and a variety of options.

I love that we have restaurants like this in Citrus County because sometimes you want to try something outside of the usual steak, seafood, or burger rotation.

The Pros

  • A different dining experience from the usual local options.

  • European-inspired menu.

  • Downtown Crystal River location.

  • A nice option for couples who enjoy trying new cuisines.

The Cons

  • Operating hours and availability should be confirmed before visiting.

  • The menu may be less familiar if you prefer traditional American or Italian dishes.

  • Smaller portions than the average portions in town.

My verdict: Put this one on your list if you enjoy exploring different cuisines and want to try something a little different in Crystal River.

Honorable Mention: Italian Dinner Dates

For some reason, Italian restaurants always seem to make the date night list. And honestly, I understand why.

There’s something about pasta, wine, good bread, and a cozy atmosphere that just works.

Depending on where you’re located and what you’re planning to do before or after dinner, these are a few options worth considering.

Near Citrus Hills / Hernando:

Near Crystal River:

These are a little more casual than the fine-dining options above, but sometimes a really good Italian dinner is exactly what you need.

PART 2: DATE NIGHT ACTIVITIES

Now, this is where things get interesting!

There are so many things Bret and I enjoy doing together, and I think sometimes we get so caught up in the idea that date night has to mean going out to dinner that we forget about all the other fun things we can do.

1. Glow Golf at ZenWoods Golf Club | Inverness

This is such a fun one!

ZenWoods hosts special nighttime golf experiences and glow events throughout the year. They’re not necessarily happening every Saturday, so you’ll want to check their event calendar before planning your evening.

Neither Bret nor I are particularly serious golfers, but that honestly didn’t matter.

The pre-game atmosphere, food, drinks, driving range, and glowing golf balls made it such a fun experience.

Even if you’re not a golfer, I think this is a really unique date night idea.

They also have Toptracer driving range bays where you can play virtual courses, compete in games, and order food and drinks.

My recommendation: Check their after-dark offerings and event calendar. You don’t need to be a golfer to have fun here!

2. Escape Room | Crystal River

This is a good one, especially for a double date!

If you like puzzles, problem-solving, and can work well as a team, this is a fun way to spend an evening.

Or, if you want to find out just how well you and your partner communicate under pressure, this might be the perfect opportunity. Haha!

3. Bike Ride Along the Withlacoochee State Trail

If you’re a pretty active couple and enjoy being outdoors, this is a great option.

Grab your bikes and plan a ride along the Withlacoochee State Trail.

The trail is approximately 47 miles long, paved, and travels through Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties.

One idea I particularly like is planning a ride that takes you toward the Hernando area, with a food stop afterward at Gustto Empanadas.

📍 Gustto Empanadas: 2258 N Florida Avenue, Hernando, FL 34442.

My recommendation: Make it a daytime date, bring water, and plan your route around a food stop. You get exercise and food. Win-win!

4. Night Dolphin Ecotour with Only Phins Adventures

Okay, this one is REALLY special.

If you’re looking for something memorable and a little more adventurous, I highly recommend checking out Only Phins Adventures.

Captain Justin has built a genuine connection with the wild dolphins in the area, and his nighttime dolphin tours offer a completely different way to experience our local waters.

The tours depart just before sunset. You’ll head out toward the Gulf, enjoy the sunset, and then spend the evening observing wild dolphins as they swim, hunt, and interact around the boat under the lights.

It’s such a unique experience!

One thing to know: These are private tours, so the pricing is higher if you’re only going as a couple.

Current pricing starts at $350 for up to four people, with additional guests available for an extra fee, up to six passengers.

So, if you have another couple or two friends who would enjoy this, you can split the cost.

Personally, I think it’s absolutely worth considering for a special occasion.

5. Bowling at Bowl 360 | Homosassa

I mean, it’s bowling. Not much explanation needed!

But Bowl 360 is a really fun option if you want something casual where you can eat, drink, play, and not worry about having to dress up.

They have modern bowling lanes, arcade games, food, cocktails, and plenty of finger foods to snack on between games.

What I particularly love about this place is that they stay open pretty late, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

6. Cocktails and Cigars at The Torch | Crystal River

If you’re around Crystal River and one or both of you enjoy cigars, I recommend stopping by The Torch.

They have cocktails, wine, beer, small plates, and cigars. But what I particularly enjoy is the atmosphere.

It’s a nice place to slow down, sit back, enjoy a drink, and have a conversation.

7. Dinner, a Walk, and Drinks Downtown Inverness

If you’re planning to have dinner at Oscar Penn’s, I’d definitely consider making a whole evening out of being downtown.

Depending on the time of year and weather, you can take a walk around Liberty Park before or after dinner.

The park is right next to the downtown area, making it an easy addition to your evening.

Afterward, you can grab a nightcap at one of the downtown bars.

A couple of options worth checking out:

  • Side Bar

  • Twysted Vine

I love when a date night doesn’t require driving from one place to another every 20 minutes. Being able to park, enjoy dinner, walk around, and grab another drink makes the whole evening feel more relaxed.

8. Dancing and DJs at St. Johns Tavern | Crystal River

If you like music, dancing, DJs, and a more energetic atmosphere, I’ll always recommend keeping an eye on what’s happening at St. Johns Tavern.

Located in downtown Crystal River, St. Johns offers a fun atmosphere, great food, cocktails, and regular entertainment.

9. Farm-to-Table Dinner at Growing Back to Eden | Crystal River

Growing Back to Eden is a regenerative farm in Crystal River, and they host special farm-to-table dinner experiences throughout the year.

I had the opportunity to attend one of their pizza dinner nights, and the entire experience was so special.

The property, the atmosphere, the food, and the overall concept make this a really unique place.

These dinners are not happening every weekend, and tickets are limited. Some are pricier so keep that in mind.

10. Catch a Show at the Valerie Theatre | Inverness

If you’re into live music, theater, comedy, or performing arts, this is a great option.

The Valerie Theatre is a historic theater located right in downtown Inverness.

They host a variety of performances, including plays, concerts, comedy shows, and other cultural events.

My recommendation: Check the event calendar and plan dinner around a performance. It’s a great way to make an evening feel a little more special.

11. Local Theater and Creative Events at Twistid Arts Initiative | Inverness

Another local organization worth keeping on your radar is Twistid Arts Initiative.

They bring performing arts, visual arts, workshops, and creative events to the community.

Their programming includes theater productions, art classes, exhibitions, and special events throughout the year.

12. Seasonal Events and the Citrus County Fairgrounds

This one is a little more dependent on the time of year, but don’t overlook local events!

Depending on the season, there may be a fair, festival, market, concert, or special event happening at the Citrus County Fairgrounds.

Sometimes the simplest dates end up being the most fun.

A FEW DATE NIGHT COMBINATIONS I’D RECOMMEND

THE CLASSIC ROMANTIC DATE

Dinner at Katch 22 + cocktails + dessert.

THE CRYSTAL RIVER EVENING

Dinner at Vintage on 5th + a walk around downtown + drinks at The Torch.

THE DOWNTOWN INVERNESS DATE

Dinner at Oscar Penn’s + Liberty Park + drinks at Side Bar or Twysted Vine.

THE FUN DOUBLE DATE

Crystal River Escape Room + dinner + bowling at Bowl 360.

THE ADVENTUROUS DATE

Only Phins nighttime dolphin tour + dinner afterward.

THE UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Farm-to-table dinner at Growing Back to Eden.

THE CASUAL BUT FUN DATE

ZenWoods after-dark golf + food and drinks.

THE ARTSY DATE NIGHT

Catch a live production at Twistid Arts Initiative, then head downtown to Inverness for drinks afterward. Make a stop at Side Bar or Twysted Vine to wind down the evening.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

For a classic movie night, start with happy hour at Tequila Garden, then catch a film at Citrus Cinema. Both are in the same plaza!

And if you’re thinking, “Seriously… no ice cream?!” Many of the dining spots I mentioned have incredible desserts, but if you’re craving a scoop after a nice walk, Guyer’s is always a good idea; and so is the Ice Cream Barr at Crumps!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Anywho, I think all of these are super fun ideas, and I’m already thinking of a ton more!

One thing I really enjoy about living in Citrus County is discovering that there are more things to do than you might initially think.

Sometimes you just have to look a little closer, try something new, or give a local business a chance.

And remember, date night doesn’t always have to mean spending a ton of money or celebrating a special occasion. Sometimes it’s just about getting out of the house, trying a new restaurant, supporting a local business, and spending quality time together.

I hope this list gives you a few ideas for your next date night!

And apparently, you guys are pretty romantic because this has been such a popular question lately. So now I’m thinking…

Should I put together a couple’s gift guide featuring fun, local gift ideas in Citrus County? Or maybe date day ideas?

I feel like those could be fun ones!

As always, if you visit any of these places, let them know you found them through KCH Travels. And if you have another date night recommendation I should try, send it my way!

Happy dating, Citrus County!
